Is it too late in the year to plant rose bushes here in north Texas?

I was just given 3 rose bushes in large pots. I would like to plant them in the yard instead of keeping them in the pots all winter. Our temps, right now, range from 80's to the 60's at night. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a rose lover/grower in D/FW area. Now is the perfect time for planting roses. Below is one website that tells you exactly how to plant the rose bush. You're going to love it...beware, though, having roses is addicting.



There are many types of roses--climbers, bushes, even ground cover roses (saw one at Weston nursery in Ft. Worth couple weeks ago). I buy according to color and fragrance.



One last note, choose a sunny spot. Water your rose from the bottom, not the leaves. Keep the foliage thinned in the middle of the plant and at the bottom to get air through. These two bits of advice will help cut down on the common diseases that roses get, powdery mildew and black spot.



If you do get either of those (which can be expected from time to time)--Pick off any damaged leaves and discard them in your trash so as not to spread them in the garden. Make your own solution of: 1 Tablespoon each of Vegetable oil, Baking Soda (NOT baking powder), 1 Teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, and one gallon of water. Spray it on top AND bottom of leaves. .

Reply:I live far north of you and I planted mine a few weeks ago. it's better to have them in the ground, if that's where you want them. They can grow roots before they go dormant.
Reply:Fall and early spring are the ideal times for planting roses as this is when they are dormant.
Reply:Go for it now!! We plant roses in February when the temps are low....not freezing....roses like to be planted in the fall to get a good start.....I am in south Texas.
Reply:I'd wait until it gets a little cooler, actually. I live in Arizona, and I wait until it is in the 50's or high 40's at night. For me that is usually in December. You could probably plant them now if you think it is going to start getting really cold soon, though.
Reply:Yes go ahead and plant the roses. They will be fine. Just be sure to water them well so their roots get established. I work at a wholesale nursery in N.C. and our most busiest time of the year is autumn and spring. The plant shouldnt be sressed out so much either since it is cooler now. If shrubs and trees are planted in the summer it is stressful becouse it is so hot. Just be sure to water, you would need to water the roses in deep. that way the roots grow further down into the ground, which makes a better established plant.
