I have cut down my rose bushes and now they look terrible, I have to start again, how should I prune them?

The stems start off nice and strong, then willow out into spindly short "primrose" looking roses (which they are not.)

When should I prune them?

How can I start from scratch?

They were so beautiful (previous homeowner) and I have ruined them!!

Help!

Roses should be cut right back at the end of winter, after the last frosts.

If you live in a more moderate climate, the timing might be different.

They are a remarkable resiliant plant and should recover with some TLC. Rose food etc.

If you are still worried see your nearest nurseryman

Make take 12 months or longer
Reply:Just leave them alone and in the spring they will start to flourish again. They are supposed to be cut down in the fall, And don't forget to use rose fertilizers you have a few months to act just don't over do it rose bushes last for years!
Reply:I highly recommend you to read all about roses. It is a beautiful book.
Reply:To start over, cut the bush down to 3 or 4 main canes about 6-10 inches. Choose branches that are thick and healthy and make sure they are growing in a direction where they are not going to grow over each other.
