What is the best time to start a rose clipping?

I live in central TX, and would like to start a clipping of a very old plant from my Grandfather. What is the best time, and best method to be successful?

When you prune in the third week of February, take the 6 inch tops of each cutting and cut at a long slant at the bottom

Then pull off all of the leaves except the very top two(leave the end bud bud also). Then plant the cuttings DEEP into the well tilled soil; leaving only the bud and two small leaves showing!

In all practicality, I just whack off my rose bushes at 16" with my small chain saw and do the above LOL

If you desire more cutting starts cut up the rest of the whacked off rose limbs into 6" lengths and also plant them deep with a little green sticking out. Rooting start %s go down a little-- but it is still a viable way to mass propagate old family roses.

Interestingly, when you dig out the well rooted roses later; the roots left in the ground will sometime sprout new plants.

On several occasions folks from my church came over and we bare-rooted these ancient roses and they sold them at a church bazaar/garage sale, with lucrative results!

It is kind of comical to me that folks that bought these assorted heirloom type roses, call them "Harrington Heritage Roses" and they are now prized to own all over SE %26amp; even Central Texas.

You can find a few good ole roses in old-town Alto, Grapeland, Slocum, Rusk, Denson Springs and Wells, in your area.

One word of caution, you will have to water these cutting very often to get them to set roots and survive in the rooting process.

Boy, I would love to see your Grandfathers' ole rose in bloom.
Reply:Wait until after the last possible date of frost. In TX, prune back in late Feb. You do not want the new growth that appears in about 3 weeks after pruning to freeze. That could kill the bush. Once you see new growth, you can start your fertilizer program.
