My Rose was fine about 18" tall after my ex weed eated, the poor rose was wilted. After looking to see what was wrong, he had knocked all the "bark" off it about 1" . Leaving only 2-3" above ground. Is there any hope for it?
Can you save a rose bush that's been weed eat-ted all the way around?
I raise miniatures and have a bed of some 20 varieties. Other than the possibility of the wound becoming infected you should have no problem with the roses survival. I would suggest one or the other of these paths: first you can stop by Lowes or Home Depot or your favorite landscaping supply and get a can of pruners paint and use that to seal the wound. If that should fail or depending on the part of the country you live in, you can cut the rose back to the lowest part of the wound, paint the cut to keep out insects and infection. Do this just prior to frost, then cover the rose with mulch and wait for spring to renew the plant. I live in Arizona, and I cut all my roses back to the ground each year in December or January. It helps to control size, insects, and keeps the plants in a state of vigoroous growth that promotes blooming.
Reply:It may come back - However if it was a grafted rose you will get the root stock growing now. These often do not flower. Moreover, whish for the best!.
Reply:yeah sure just have some faith
Reply:well the weed eater did not hurt the rose bush. it will come back up just cover it up this winter.
Reply:Yes you can cuz I have one that I have cut deep into the ground and it keeps on coming back.
Reply:Most modern rose bushes are grafted. That means it is growing on a different rootstock. If the whole trunk is girdled it can't take up water and might die. What will grow back will probably be rootstock and not desirable(climbing rangey thing that only blooms magenta in Spring called Dr. Huey). If it was an older plant with one whole trunk- be prepared for death. If it had many parts of it's trunk and only part of it was girdled, the other parts might live.
Reply:Rose bushes are very sturdy. You can trim it down to the bear essentials and it will grow back again. Try it, don't give up on it.
Reply:Poor thing. But rosebushes are tough, so keep an eye on it, dust it for mildew or insects as necessary, and don't give up on it yet. Come spring, prune it well and it may surprise you.
Reply:I would prune it down to 2-3 inches above the ground and leave it alone. It should come back on it's own next spring as long as the roots were not disturbed. Water it as needed.
Reply:yes, give it time it will bloom again
