How far back can I trim a desert rose bonsai?

Mine is getting pretty tall but it has a nice fat bulb. I want it to be shorter, but it kinda shot up tall.

2 inches.
Reply:You can trim it down to about 2" above the main trunk. You might want to send a photo to me at:

what to do. You may also want to look at some of the desert rose bonsai on my site:

Reply:Hi:

There are different ways to trim a Bonsai. The frist way is pruning to shape. This method is actually shaping it out of its natural form. You can shape your desert rose with flexable wire to bend outward instead of taller.

Another method is pruning up. You would remove the growth from the top and then remove it from different layers of the Bonsi. This will allow more air through the branches.

I would probably suggest to trim back the top. Always trim at an angle so you do not damage the branches.

Pruning Bonsai is very natural and you if you want to maintain your Bonsai, pruning should be done regularly.

I hope this has helped some and I will link you to my properly pruning page. This page also shows you steps on how to properly prune shrubs. Good luck to you and I hope this has helped. If you need any further suggestions, please feel free to contact me at the website. I will also link you to my site map as I have articles on the Yen garden. Have a great day!
