I have 20 foot tall columns on the souhwest side of my home and I would like to train roses to climb them. Will they climb to the top?
How high can a climbing rose climb?
Careful here, Roses do not climb like you may be thinking. They have no way of attaching themselves to a solid wall/post like other vines do. They must be trained to climb by weaving through a lattice or fence. If you want roses to climb a column, you must either attach something for them to climb or tie the vines to the column. Roses also need at least 6 hrs of direct sunlight a day. More is better, but they can get by on six.
20' is about the extent most roses can reach. Some however, can grow twice that amount. Do your homework when selecting your roses. Also, you may want to do additional homework on climbing roses. Climbing Roses in zones 7/6 or lower may require special attention to survive the winter. Unless you select a very hardy plant, you may need to remove the rose form the column (a vote for the tying method), lay the vine on the ground and either bury the vine or cover it w/mulch or straw. I am in Indiana and have 17 climbing roses. If its not a hobby for you, they could be considered a pain in the a__.
You may want to consider a Clematis or a Climbing Hydrangea. Much less care in colder climates than roses.
Reply:If you buy true climbing roses, it is certainly possible.
