How do I care for my rose bushes?

Do I prune the old decayed roses? How do I do it? What should I spray and when for insects? This time of year, do roses continue to bloom? I bought a house with roses everywhere, but bugs are getting to them.
How do I care for my rose bushes?
Roses are not as hard to care for as people think. Yes, you need to trim off the fading blossoms, for one thing as soon as they start to fade the plant is still committing energy to that blossom in that it starts to form a rose hip. Expending that energy into a faded bloom takes away from starting new blooms. You deadhead by starting at the faded bloom go down the stem until you come to a branch with 5 leaves, I am serious! Do not trim it at the 3 or 4 leave branch, go to the 5 leave branch and cut with a sharp trimmer, a nice diagonal cut. This is where the new flower will start.

Roses like a good long soak at least once a week, more if you live somewhere very hot and dry. Water only at the base of the plant! Roses hate to be wet!! Never spray water over your plant.

As far as bugs or black spot. Talk to your local garden center. They will be able to diagnose your specific problem and recommend what works in your area.

Like one of the guys above, I too an in the Midwest and have cold winters. However, my roses thrive. I don't do a whole lot to them in preparation for winter. I do trim them back in late October and I put leaves on top of the base. Other than that I do not cover them.

Happy Gardening!
Reply:Start by deadheading. That means cutting off the old roses and the rose hips (a seed pod that's usually round). Lots of people have very fussy directions about doing it, but the basic idea is that removing the old roses stimulates the bush to produce new ones. Prune off any dead or really wimpy looking growth, too.

I would also urge you to feed the roses, preferably with a good organic rose and flower food. A healthy plant stands up to bugs and disease better. And put some good compost around the base of the plant. This serves several purposes: feeds the plant a natural, slow-release food; helps keep weeds down; and helps conserve water. You won't want to feed the roses too much longer this summer, because you don't want to encourage lots of tender green new branches before the cold weather comes, but one more time to help get them healthy before winter would be good.

As far as sprays, go to your local garden store and ask for their advice. Try not to go too toxic; many sprays kill everything around, including bees and ladybugs and other beneficial insects. There are some good organic rose sprays - just ask! Spray the rose bushes in the evening, because the bright sun on the just-sprayed leaves can cause damage. Get the undersides of the leaves, not just the tops, because the bugs and any diseases are often hiding beneath. You will probably have to spray every week until you have things under control. Good luck!
Reply:Go to your locate garden center, they will point you in the right direction. Most roses take a lot of work, but they are worth the effort. I have not had much luck with roses. After two or three years mine die. This may be a result of the winters that we have here in the mid-west.

Good luck!
Reply:I am not great with roses but I have been coached to be so.

I would use a systemic rose care product that you treat the ground around the rose with about every two weeks. It keeps the bugs at bay and feeds them.

Prune off the dead wood and dead head the dead roses. You should do well with continuing blooms.

Heirloom roses only bloom for part of the season, but most roses will bloom late may into early fall.

Good luck. I stink with most roses. They are fussy.
Reply:I'm not a big gardener, but have had great success with my roses. One of the biggest things I always done to mine, is keep water off the peddles of the roses, it will cause mold and wrecks the plant.I trim off the old flowers where there is a stem with five leaves, just above it.Ortho also sells a spray you can use made just for roses.good luck
