What is best to put around rose bushes, wheat or pine straw?

Also, what are the advantages or disadvanges to using this over mulch? Thanks for any help. I have new Double Knock Out Roses planted.

I would say the pine needles would be best. With wheat you are most likely to have seeds mixed in which will germinate around your rose bushes. As far as being an advantage or disadvantage over mulch, I don't think there is one. Other than pine needles may look better. Either way they would both be considered a mulch. Just make sure whatever you do put down doesn't have any seeds in it or you will be pulling weeds.
Reply:There is a very large rose garden in Tyler, Tx that is professional maintained, they use pine straw on all of their beds.
Reply:Pine needles will last longer but they are acidic. If you add pine you will need to keep your eye on the pH and add lime as needed. You will need to run a soil test to do it right.
